City of Broken Magic by Mirah Bolender5/20/2023 ![]() The city’s propaganda campaign has convinced its populace that infestations are (mostly) a thing of the past, but Clae and Laura know better, and it’s up to them to keep people safe from the slimy creatures that propagate from broken magic, because once an infestation grows out of control, it’s a nasty business indeed. Their job is to eradicate the infestations of monsters that result from broken magic amulets, which are used for many things, including electricity among the city’s elite, and require regular upkeep. Twenty-year-old Laura Kramer is the frequently exasperated apprentice (of only a few months) to the perennially cranky Clae Sinclair, one of the few Sweepers left on the island city of Amicae in the Orien Territories. ![]() In this debut novel, specially trained operatives called Sweepers are the only thing standing in the way of creatures that devour magic-and humans. ![]()

The Age of Wonder by Richard Holmes5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() He would hold that post for 41 years and encourage the other young pioneers whose stories Mr. Holmes quotes deftly from Banks’s delightfully candid journals, noting that Banks wrote with “gentlemanly jeu d’esprit.”) The book then follows Banks back to England, where, at the age of 35, he became president of the Royal Society in 1778. James Cook, brought the eager young botanist Joseph Banks to a place he would regard as a paradise, botanical and otherwise. The first, a trip to Tahiti in 1769 led by Capt. Holmes uses two exploratory voyages as bookends. In order to structure his big, sweeping book about such issues, Mr. Was that cause for wonder or terror? What were its theological implications? How would it influence a future generation of poets? Mother to son jasmine holmes5/19/2023 ![]() The ten Black women portrayed here are probably unfamiliar to most Americans. “What if,” she wonders, “instead of putting Uncle Sam in a cape and putting Lady Liberty on a pedestal, we told the story of America as the story of God’s faithfulness – and not our own?” (p.15) Holmes shares her excitement upon discovering the ten remarkable women she introduces us to, but even more, she urges us to look past her story, even past these women, to the God who made them in his image and allowed their lives to magnify his glory. One reviewer on GoodReads calls it a “historio-memoir,” defined as a book that “considers how studying history influenced the memoirist.” While that description is certainly apt for this book, Carved in Ebony accomplishes so much more. As a Christian, an historian, and a lover of story, Holmes went in search of Black women whose work has left a lasting impact on this nation and on the family of God. ![]() ![]() Jasmine Holmes’ new book, Carved in Ebony: Lessons From the Black Women Who Shape Us is just the kind of book a parent could read alongside a teenager to spark important discussions. ![]()
